If you ask someone who has already visited Medell\u00edn what you cannot miss, the answer is almost always the same: Guatap\u00e9. It is the most requested day trip from the city, and you only need to see two photos (the giant rock towering over a reservoir full of islands, and a town where every house looks hand-painted) to understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guatap\u00e9 is a small municipality in eastern Antioquia, just over an hour from Medell\u00edn, known throughout the country for its z\u00f3calos: the decorative reliefs on the lower part of the facades, painted with bright colors and motifs ranging from geometric figures to scenes from the daily life of each family. Formerly, each z\u00f3calos represented the trade of the person who lived in that house, a tradition that the town decided to preserve and turn into its hallmark. Walking through its central streets, especially Calle del Recuerdo, is like walking through an open-air folk art gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minutes from the town stands the area's true protagonist: a giant rock that can be climbed via a zigzag staircase built over one of its natural crevices, with several hundred steps to the top. At the top, the reward is one of Colombia's most photographed views: the reservoir split into dozens of water arms, islands, and peninsulas that stretch as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The climb is not technically demanding, but it does require a good basic physical condition and time, especially if the day is sunny. It is worth bringing water and taking it easy; there are several intermediate viewpoints to rest at before reaching the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is today a postcard landscape has behind it a history that many visitors do not know. The reservoir surrounding the Guatap\u00e9 Stone is artificial: it was built as part of a hydroelectric project in the second half of the twentieth century, and for that it was necessary to flood the old town center of the neighboring municipality of El Pe\u00f1ol, whose inhabitants were relocated to what is known today as Nuevo Pe\u00f1ol. Guatap\u00e9, on the other hand, ended up on the shores of the reservoir without losing its original town center, and ended up being the one that benefited the most from the tourism that the very same landscape generated later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
